If your AC is hitting setpoint but your house still feels muggy and clammy, your humidity is probably running 60%+ when it should be 45–55%. This is more common than people realize — especially in oversized systems and lake-area homes. Here's what's actually happening.
Most Likely Causes
1. AC oversized for the home (very common)
An oversized AC cools the air to setpoint quickly — too quickly. The system doesn't run long enough on each cycle to remove moisture. Result: cold and clammy. Common in newer Texas homes where builders default to bigger units. Diagnosis: short cycle times (under 10 min) plus high humidity = oversized.
2. Low refrigerant
Reduced refrigerant means a less-cold evaporator coil, which means less moisture condenses out of the air. Symptoms: weak cooling AND high humidity simultaneously.
3. Excessive outdoor air infiltration
Bad weatherstripping, a leaky attic, or a ventilation system pulling too much outdoor air can flood the house with humidity faster than the AC removes it.
4. Variable-speed system set wrong
Newer variable-speed AC units have a 'humidity priority' mode that runs the compressor longer at lower fan speeds for better dehumidification. Often this isn't enabled out of the box.
5. Lake-area / coastal humidity load
Cedar Creek Lake, Lake Athens, and similar waterfront properties deal with sustained 75%+ outdoor RH. AC alone often can't keep up. Solution: whole-home dehumidifier integrated with the AC.
6. Damp crawlspace or basement
Crawlspace humidity migrates up into the house. Encapsulation and a crawlspace dehumidifier solve it.
Try These Steps Before You Call
- Buy a $15 hygrometer. Measure indoor humidity — should be 40–55%.
- Check that your AC isn't short-cycling (running less than 10 min then shutting off in summer).
- Verify weatherstripping at exterior doors.
- If you have a variable-speed system, check the thermostat for a 'comfort' or 'dehumidification priority' setting.
Still not working?
If indoor humidity stays above 60% with the AC running, you likely need a whole-home dehumidifier or a system rebalancing. Call (214) 466-6465.
