Short cycling — the burner firing up for a minute or two and then shutting off, only to restart shortly after — stresses every component of the furnace, kills efficiency, and never actually heats the house evenly. It's also almost always fixable. Here's the diagnostic order of operations we run.
Most Likely Causes
1. Dirty flame sensor (very common)
If the burner lights, runs for 5-30 seconds, then cuts off — and this happens repeatedly with 2-3 retry attempts before the board locks out for an hour — you have a dirty flame sensor. The flame is lighting but the sensor can't detect it, so the control board shuts the gas off as a safety. A five-minute cleaning with fine emery cloth fixes it, or a $140-$220 replacement if it's degraded.
2. Overheating trips the high-limit safety
If the burner runs for 3-10 minutes then shuts off while the blower keeps running, the heat exchanger is overheating and the high-limit switch is doing its job. Almost always caused by restricted airflow: dirty filter (change it now), closed supply registers, or a dirty blower wheel starving the system of air.
3. Oversized furnace
A furnace that's too big for the home heats to setpoint in 2-3 minutes and shuts off before running a proper cycle. Result: temperature swings, uneven heat, dry air, and 20% shorter equipment life from the constant cycling. Common in Texas where builders default to oversized units. Fix is to replace with a properly-sized furnace (Manual J calculation) or, less dramatically, a two-stage or modulating gas valve retrofit if the furnace supports it.
4. Thermostat in a bad location
If the thermostat is mounted in a spot that heats quickly — near a supply register, above a stove, in direct afternoon sun — it'll satisfy in a minute while the rest of the house is still cold. Then the setpoint drops and it re-fires. Relocation or a remote sensor solves it.
5. Failed inducer motor or pressure switch
If the inducer motor is losing bearings or the pressure switch is intermittent, the safety chain briefly opens and shuts the burner off. Symptoms: short cycling that's random rather than time-based, often paired with unusual sounds from the inducer at startup.
6. Cracked heat exchanger (safety issue)
A cracked heat exchanger can cause pressure irregularities that trigger safety shutoffs. This one you don't diagnose yourself — a cracked heat exchanger also leaks carbon monoxide into the home. If you suspect it, turn the furnace off and call us for combustion testing today.
Try These Steps Before You Call
- Replace the air filter — dirty filter causes overheating that triggers safety shutoffs.
- Walk every room and open all supply registers fully. Don't 'redirect' heat by closing vents — it starves the system.
- Check that the thermostat isn't in direct sunlight, near a supply register, or above a heat source.
- Time the cycles: burner on for less than 3 minutes = probably flame sensor or oversized. Burner on for 5-10 minutes then shuts down with blower still running = high-limit / overheat.
- Note whether it happens every cycle (component issue) or only sometimes (intermittent electrical, sensor, or pressure switch).
- If you smell anything unusual or suspect a heat exchanger issue, turn the furnace off at the breaker until we can inspect.
