When your heater is running but the air coming out of the vents is cool instead of hot, the blower is doing its job but the heat source isn't. The cause depends on the system type — a gas furnace, a heat pump, and an electric air handler all fail this way for different reasons. Start with the quickest checks and work down.

Most Likely Causes

1. Thermostat fan set to 'ON' instead of 'AUTO' (check this first)

If your thermostat fan is set to 'ON', the blower runs 24/7 — including between heating cycles when the burner isn't lit. You'll get room-temperature air flowing constantly and warm air only when the burner cycles on. Switch the fan setting to 'AUTO' and see if the problem disappears. This one accounts for a surprising number of "heater blowing cold" service calls.

2. Overheating tripped the high-limit safety

When airflow is restricted — usually by a very dirty filter or closed supply registers — the heat exchanger gets too hot and the high-limit switch shuts off the gas or heat strips as a safety. The blower keeps running to cool the system down, so you get cold air blowing. Fix the airflow (change filter, open registers) and the system resets after cool-down.

3. Failed flame sensor or igniter (gas furnaces)

If the burner lights briefly then cuts off (dirty flame sensor) or never lights at all (failed igniter), the blower will still run — pushing unheated air through the vents. See our furnace won't ignite diagnostic for detail.

4. Heat pump in defrost cycle (heat pumps only)

In cold weather, heat pumps periodically run a defrost cycle where they briefly reverse to melt frost off the outdoor coil. During defrost, the indoor blower keeps running but the air is cool for 3-10 minutes. This is normal. If your air stays cool for 15+ minutes, the reversing valve or defrost board may have failed.

5. Auxiliary/emergency heat not engaged (heat pumps)

Heat pumps lose efficiency below about 30°F and rely on backup electric heat strips to make up the difference. If the aux heat isn't wired correctly, the low-voltage relay failed, or the heat strips themselves burned out, you'll get cool air on the coldest nights when you most need heat. A thermostat set to 'Emergency Heat' should engage the strips directly — test that as a diagnostic.

6. Wrong thermostat wiring or dead thermostat

If the thermostat is telling the system to blow but not calling for heat, you'll get cold air. Common after a thermostat replacement where the W (heat call) or E (emergency heat) wires weren't landed correctly. Also happens with dying smart thermostats that lose one of their zone signals.

Try These Steps Before You Call

  • Switch the thermostat fan from 'ON' to 'AUTO' and give it 15 minutes.
  • Replace the air filter — a very dirty filter is the #1 cause of overheating that shuts off the burner.
  • Walk every room and open all supply registers fully.
  • If you have a heat pump, wait 15 minutes to see if you were in a defrost cycle. Then switch the thermostat to 'Emergency Heat' and see if warm air returns — that isolates whether aux heat works.
  • Check the LED code on your furnace control board (through the sight glass) — the blink pattern tells you the failure type.
  • If the burner lights briefly then cuts off, that's almost always a flame sensor — cheap fix.
